Neurogenic Knee Pain

Types of Neurogenic Knee Pain

Neurogenic knee pain, can develop in 3 different types:

  1. Neuroma developing in superficial nerves after trauma or surgery:
This is the most common cause and presents with painful Tinel's sign on palpation (tenderness to pressure and percussion). It can be treated by massage or surgical excision of the neuroma.
  2. Saphenous nerve lesion:
It may develop after injury or surgery. Desensitization massage or elimination of nerve irregularities gives positive results.
  3. Sympathetic nerve dysfunction:
This condition is known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and can develop after minor injuries. Although this clinical condition is not fully understood, it is very difficult to treat.

Treatment Methods

Treatment for neurogenic knee pain varies depending on the underlying type:

  • Massage or surgical excision may be applied to the neuroma.
  • Desensitization massage and elimination of nerve irregularities may be effective in saphenous nerve lesions.
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) can be treated with physical therapy and/or medications such as gabapentin-pregabalin. However, the condition is often difficult to treat.

During diagnosis, it is essential The hip area should also be evaluated., because hip problems can mimic knee pain.
