Muscle Wasting or scientific name Sarcopenia, is a term of Greek origin, derived from the words “sarx (muscle)” and “penia (loss)”. It refers to a progressive loss of muscle mass and muscle strength. Sarcopenia is usually accompanied by decreased physical activity, loss of endurance, slow walking, easy fatigue, imbalance and falls. These symptoms are common characteristics of muscle diseases related to aging.

Although sarcopenia is more common in older individuals, it can also occur at a younger age due to poor nutrition, inactivity, or prolonged bedridden conditions. Healthy muscle function is critical to maintaining functional independence.

Causes of Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia can develop due to many factors, including:

  • Structural factors: Advanced age and being a woman are risk factors for sarcopenia. Factors such as low birth weight and genetic predisposition can affect muscle metabolism.
  • Aging: Increased cell destruction, hormonal changes (decreased levels of testosterone, growth hormone, IGF-1), insulin resistance and decreased neural stimulation lead to muscle loss.
  • Eating disorders: Inadequate protein intake, low physical activity, smoking and alcohol use increase the risk of sarcopenia.
  • Inactivity: Being bedridden or inactive for long periods of time accelerates muscle loss.
  • Chronic diseases: Diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cognitive disorders, and immune system deficiencies are associated with loss of muscle strength.

The most common causes of muscle loss are protein deficiency and lack of physical activity. The loss of muscle strength, which begins in the 50s, becomes evident in the back, arm, waist and leg muscles in the 70s.

What Can Be Done For Patients With Sarcopenia?

The following methods may be effective in combating sarcopenia:

  • Improving the nutrition regime and applying a protein-based diet,
  • Increasing regular physical activity,
  • Taking vitamin and mineral supplements,
  • Taking precautions to reduce the risk of falling,
  • Increasing muscle blood circulation and improving patients' walking distances using negative pressure vacuum therapy (VACUMED).
