How Does IMS Technique Work?

IMS technique, is applied by inserting very thin needles into the muscles where the tense myofascial bands are located. This process creates a reflex contraction in the muscle. When the needle is first inserted, a contraction occurs in the muscle and it grasps the needle. The muscle then lengthens, relaxes and the needle is easily removed. Usually one needle is used during the procedure, but two or three needles can be used if necessary. Electric current can also be given to the needles to increase relaxation.

IMS technique, while stimulating muscle reflexes (spinal reflexes), creates small tears in the cell walls of muscle fibers. These micro-injuries initiate an inflammatory process known as the Type 2 pain response. Inflammation is an important part of the healing process and allows the muscle to repair itself.

With IMS:

  • Stimulation of nerve pathways increases,
  • Communication at the muscle and nerve junction improves,
  • Muscle gains vitality and flexibility increases,
  • Oxygen and nutrition deficiency is eliminated,
  • Metabolites (toxic substances) are easily excreted.

Side Effects of Dry Needling Therapy (DMS)

IMS The treatment is generally well tolerated by patients. During treatment:

  • A mild and temporary feeling of pain may occur in the area where the needle is inserted,
  • In rare cases, pneumothorax may develop, which requires urgent treatment.
  • Small subcutaneous bleeding may occur in those taking aspirin or blood thinners, but this usually does not require stopping the treatment.
  • Very rarely, low blood pressure may occur in applications to the neck area, but this passes with a few minutes of rest.

Where Else Is Dry Needling Therapy (IMS) Used?

IMS It can be used not only in the treatment of painful syndromes, but also in different areas:

  • In the treatment of skin wrinkles and micro-cavities,
  • As rehabilitation support for shoulder and hip syndromes of hemiplegic patients,
  • In the treatment of neuropathies,
  • Eliminating joint contractures and increasing joint range of motion.
