IMS and Neuropathic Pain

Kuru iğne ve nöropatik ağrı, kuru iğne tedavisi, IMS nedir, kuru iğne nedir

IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation), is an effective method used to treat contractures and shortening of deep muscles that are locked myofascially. Movement is essential for a healthy muscle structure. However, in the event of nerve damage (hernia, calcification, trauma, whiplash, etc.), the muscles that the nerve moves lose strength, shorten, thicken and their nutrition is disrupted. This leads to imbalances between the muscles and neuropathic pain occurs.

How Does IMS Work?

Shortened and thickened muscles increase the damage by putting pressure on the nerves and create a vicious cycle. IMS breaks this cycle and eliminates the shortening in the muscles. After the treatment, the muscles move better, gain strength and the pressure on the nerves is reduced. This provides relief from neuropathic pain.

Side Effects of IMS Treatment

Dry needle therapy, is generally well tolerated. However, the following side effects may occur in rare cases:

  • Short-term mild pain in the area where the needle is inserted
  • Subcutaneous bleeding (in those using aspirin or anticoagulant drugs)
  • Pneumothorax (very rare and requires urgent treatment)
  • Temporary low blood pressure when applied to the neck area

Is IMS an Acupuncture Method?

IMS, is not an acupuncture method. Acupuncture is an application performed on meridians and points in the body. IMS is based on neuroanatomical theory. The area to be treated is determined as a result of clinical examination and diagnosis. For example, treating the neck muscles in pain radiating to the arm provides relief by expanding the area around the nerve root.

IMS is a much more effective method than acupuncture in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. As a result of the treatment, muscles relax, gain flexibility and muscle strength increase.

Where is IMS Treatment Used?

Dry needle therapy, is used effectively in different areas as well as painful syndromes:

  • Treatment of skin wrinkles and micro-dimples
  • Treatment of shoulder and hip syndromes in hemiplegic patients
  • Treatment of neuropathies
  • Elimination of joint contractures
  • Increasing joint range of motion

Is IMS Treatment Covered by Social Security?

No, IMS treatment is not currently on the payment lists of reimbursement agencies. Therefore, patients must pay for the treatment themselves.
